James Steinberg is Vice President and Director of the Foreign Policy Studies
Program at The Brookings Institution and is a former Deputy National Security
Advisor. His previous positions include Senior Advisor at the Markle Foundation,
Director of the Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State, Deputy
Assistant Secretary for Regional Analysis in the Bureau of Intelligence and
Research at the State Department, and Senior Analyst at RAND. Mr. Steinberg
received his B.A. from Harvard in 1973 and a J.D. degree from Yale Law School
in 1978. Mr. Steinberg is the author of and contributor to many books on foreign
policy and national security topics, as well as domestic policy, including
