Jane Harman, reelected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002 by a margin
of 61.5 percent to 35 percent, represents California’s 36th Congressional
District, which runs along the Los Angeles coast from Venice to San Pedro. She
previously represented the district in Congress from 1992-1998 and 2000-2002.
In Congress, she serves as the Ranking Member on the Permanent Select Committee
on Intelligence, and on the Select Committee on Homeland Security. In 1999,
Ms. Harman was Regents’ Professor at the University of California, Los
Angeles, where she taught public policy and international relations. Earlier
in her career, she served as special counsel to the Defense Department, deputy
cabinet secretary for President Carter, and chief counsel and staff director
of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights. A graduate
of Smith College and Harvard Law School, Harman is a member of the Aspen Strategy
Group, Council on Foreign Relations, Trilateral Commission, and the Center for
Strategic & International Studies Advisory Board. She is married to Sidney
Harman, founder and Executive Chairman of Harman International Industries, and
has four children.
